Similarly, all the gifts you are carrying in your life are for others. Anyone who comes to you, you offer them your gifts. When you show kindness, your true nature comes into play. Our service should not be mechanical. Once some boy scouts were at a Sunday service, when the priest said, "You should serve." They asked, "What is this service? Could you give us some example?" He said, "Suppose an old woman wants to cross a road, go and help her cross the road."

10 Ways to Beef up Your Leadership Skills
Have you ever heard someone say, "Actually, I have to admit that I think I am really bad at managing other people. My staff all hate me and I'm incapable of doing my job".
The answer is no, of course. No one says this either because they don't believe it, or because they don't want to appear incompetent. Unfortunately research tells us that from the employees' perspective, there aren't that many terrific managers out there.
What should we take out of this dichotomy? Perhaps at the least, we could all admit to ourselves that there is room for some improvement in the way we lead others. After all, it's not the sort of skill that is easy to get 100% right all of the time. It might just be that we don't specifically know what improvements to make, so here's 10 ways to start:
1. Get a reality check.
Finding out what others think of our leadership style can be real eye-opener, and is often the most powerful driver for change. Using a 360 survey where you receive feedback from your staff, peers and manager, gives you some concrete information on a sometimes intangible subject. Use an existing tool (and there are some highly regarded ones out there) or else simply let your staff know that you are seeking feedback from them in order to improve your style. A word of caution though, your staff may not feel safe in giving feedback if they believe you are going to use it against them, or become defensive about what they say. It's up to you to create a safe environment so they feel comfortable in being open and honest with you.
2. Don't use the power of your position to get things done.
If people are questioning why certain things are done, or the logic of decisions, never pull rank in response. A critical component of effective leadership is getting the buy-in from your team and colleagues. You don't get buy-in by telling them that the decision is the right one because you are the boss and you made it. Your team may not always agree with what is being done, but they are more likely to respect you if you take the time to explain your rationale.
3. Don't think of employees as things that need to be controlled or managed.
Instead, give them the latitude to take actions and make decisions. Trust is a vital component of leadership. If you can't trust people to do their jobs well, then you either have the wrong people in the jobs, or you have the right people but you haven't trained them sufficiently. Let them do what they are there to do, without leaning over their shoulders all the time, or demand to know how they spend each minute of their time.
4. Listen, listen listen.
If there are unhappy or disgruntled people in your business, you can guarantee that at some stage they've tried to tell you what the problem is. It's likely you weren't listening (or didn't want to listen), or perhaps your initial reaction made the person think twice about bringing the problem to you. Truly listening is one of the greatest skills to develop, regardless of your role. Good listeners are genuinely interested, convey empathy, and want to find out what's behind the conversation. Great leaders are great listeners -without exception.
5. Stop providing solutions
Managers often achieve their positions after being technical specialists, and so will have an opinion or view on how to "fix" situations or problems. They believe that it's faster to tell someone what to do, or do it themselves, than give their employees an opportunity to figure it out. By always providing the answers, managers take away opportunity for their employees to learn and come up with alternative (and potentially better) ways of doing things.
6. Always be constructive - always.
Language and communication skills set great leaders apart from mediocre ones. Don't patronise or be critical of others - take complete responsibility for how you are heard. If you catch yourself about to make negative remarks, take a breath and rephrase your words to get your message across without the emotional attachment. Great leaders always find a way to say things calmly and constructively.
7. Judge your success by the success of your team.
The true success of a leader can be measured by the success of the people that work for them. As a manager of others, your prime responsibility is to ensure the success and development of your team. If they are successful, you will automatically be successful. Focus on building their skills and removing obstacles in their way. If you can achieve this, you will see the results in the productivity, motivation and satisfaction of your employees. This in turn filters through to bottom-line results.
8. Don't do things just because they will "look good".
Nothing is more transparent than managers who make decisions and behave in ways simply to look good to their superiors. If you want to improve as a leader, one of the qualities you need is integrity. The integrity to make decisions because they are right, and the integrity to stand up when you truly believe something is not in the best interests of the business. Whether or not it is in your personal best interests is much less of a consideration.
9. Include humour in your diet.
Nobody likes to work in an environment that is devoid of any fun. People are more productive when they are enjoying themselves. Creating a workplace where fun is permitted and encouraged can make a significant difference, and it's even more effective when the boss participates. It increases team spirit, and encourages people to see you as a person, not simply as the boss.

Being open about yourself helps to break down the barriers that hierarchy puts in place. What's Wrong with (Being) You? One of the great frustrations of my working life is the continuing interactions I have with people who will not be themselves. They somehow feel that it is better to be something or someone they are not.
Their reticence at being who they really are and saying what they really think stems, I have no doubt, from something to do with their psychological make up. Perhaps a lack of confidence, a fear of failure or a level of overemphasised respect for the individuals they interact with.
In corporate life, I find them in all kinds of situations.
A classic is in the interview for a job. A question I like to ask in an interview is "What are you passionate about?" Fifty percent of the time I either get a droll exposition about something to do with the job function or some or I get an treatise on leadership or people management delivered with all the passion of a cardboard cut out.
The reason I ask the question is twofold. The first is to find out what the person does actually get passionate about. Passion is a necessary behaviour to be successful in working and personal life. Also, the answers as they roll enthusiastically off the tongue say a lot about what people value.
The second reason is that those who give the pet, researched answer without passion gets marked off my list. Passion is easy to read. It's in the body language and the pace and tone of voice. When it is faked, the next question in my mind is, of course, what else have they faked? So why do people try to fake it in an interview?
Completing analysis and writing up a report about the conclusions is one example that hurts many organisations. Many consulting firms I have worked with have, as a first step in their analysis, a roughing out of the report. The theory is that this will make people think clearly about what needs to be considered. What I found though is that it became a means to find the data to support the conclusion we have come to before we even started.
Whilst consultants who allow a good technique morph into a very poor practice should be lambasted, they are not a patch on the "What do you think I should think, BOSS?" crowd. These are the people, usually senior in an organisation who in a variation of the illustration of poor consultant technique, think of what answer their masters are looking for and set out to find data to support what they think, not know, their boss wants.
In a previous corporate life, I was seconded to a team that needed to review the logistics operation in Europe. A team of ten people was put together to work on the project for three months. After one week it became apparent from the most cursory analysis of data that a major restructuring of the logistics chain was required. This was outside the scope of the study.
The study continued, however, as the leader of the study believed his boss would not like the answer. I left the study in disgust. The boss, to his credit when presented with a plan which was going to be ineffective as it did not conclude there was need for major restructuring, rejected the presentation after twenty minutes. It was too obvious that the data supported a major restructuring. Second guessing cost the organisation 30 man months of work and delayed turning around the organisation by over three months.
The demonstration of an inability to be oneself that frustrates me the most is when people make decisions based on what they think some one else might have done, rather than what they think is right.
This usually occurs when the boss is on leave but occasionally even when the boss is around. Confronted with a set of problems and data, individuals weigh the pros and cons of taking courses of action in their mind. They then inexplicably choose a course of action they don't believe in. They do so because they thought, "What would he/she do in this situation?" Of course it ends ingloriously when they find they don't have the contacts, skills, knowledge or personality to get away with their chosen line of action.
To be successful as a person we must make decisions based on our competence, our personality and our logic. We will make mistakes. At least they will be our mistakes and we will have the opportunity to learn from them. When we make other people's mistakes or second guess situations, nothing is learnt.
When we are not true to ourselves, we do not learn our limitations or our strengths. We are poorer for it and so are the organisations we work in.

You must spare twenty minutes for exercises like
walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, walking or anything
else .It is great way to shake of negative effects of stress.
2. Meditation :
Just 10 minutes of meditation every day will help you avoid the negative effects of stress and improve your clarity of focus.
3. Deal With Your Problems :
It is normal habits of the people to have ostrich approach and
stick their head in the sand and hope that the problem go away.
Don't let problems in your office and home pilling up. By dealing with them,
you are removing sources of stress for you.
4. Use Relaxation Music :
There are a lot of music CD's that are specially designed
to help you relax and let go of stress. You can choose either just
music or guided relaxation or just music to drift to by yourself.
It will help you to relax and feel more calm. You can use any time incl.
travelling time.
5. Know that you are stressed.
You should recognise when you are stressed so that you can deal
with it before it becomes a serious problem. When you are stressed out ,
you become short tempered and irritable.
6. Treat Yourself :
The tragedy is that people generally take more
care of their lifeless belongings , then do of their body and
mind. Treat yourself too. Get yourself flowers, nice food,
gifts as treat for you so that you enjoy yourself. Enjoy
one day picnic every month and atleast 15 days leave
to a calm resort.
7. Stop worrying about what others say .
Enjoy what you feel is right for you so long as
you don't hurt others.Don't worry about other people
approve of your actions.
8. Find Time for Yourself.
Last but not the least. With careers and family find time for yourself.
taking time out for you lets you relax and let go of the stresses in your

Listen to Employees !!
Managers who listen to employees have a much more efficient workforce.
Communication is healthy for any relationship, and it is especially important in the context of managers and employees. There are many benefits to listening to employees. Employees are able to voice concerns and deal with them before they become lingering problems. They also feel valued which raises productivity and lowers turnover. In addition, the manager will have a firm grasp on how everybody feels. Lastly, once employees feel they have been heard, they become much more attentive and responsive to concerns the manager has.
Employees are people and, like it or not, people tend to keep their feelings about their job bottled up inside. They can be upset about something and the manager won’t even have a clue that anything is wrong. As a result, the problem festers as resentment and anger build up inside while productivity and motivation decline. The cure for this cancer is for managers to regularly schedule meetings to listen to employees about anything related to their jobs.
Communicating regularly with employees is much like periodically changing the oil in your car. If you don’t change the oil, unknown problems will begin to slowly build up before that dreaded day when you are stuck on the side of the road and have to call a tow truck. Just as taking your car in every three thousand miles to get the oil changed will help ensure your automotive machine is in top working condition, communicating with employees will help ensure that your human resources “machine” is in top working condition.
Most managers will probably say “Well, I have an open-door management policy. Employees are free to set up a time to talk to me anytime they want.” Although this is true, employees don’t think that you really want to hear what they have to say. Employees fear if they voice their opinions that the manager might become upset, label them a complainer, or do nothing about it. Therefore, regularly scheduled meetings would create an atmosphere where listening to employees is expected. This will give employees the extra nudge to speak up and say what they really feel.
During the meetings, managers should let the employee guide where the conversation goes. Questions should be asked to clarify exactly how employees feel and to obtain more detail when needed from employees who are not comfortable being direct. Managers should also listen without judgement and stay neutral. Employees should be heard without fear of being reprimanded. In addition, managers should never choose sides or ridicule another employee in the meetings. If that happens, employees will lose respect for the manager and also begin to wonder what is being said about them when the manager meets with other employees. Lastly, managers should take this whole process very seriously and not do it half-heatedly by seeming disinterested or not listening attentively. If managers approach the meetings in a phoney fashion, then the employees will become upset and not communicate their true feelings to the manager.
Managers should also listen to employees to get ideas on how to improve the business. Employees know more about their jobs than anyone else, but they are usually the last ones to be asked how things could be done better. Why managers don’t tap into the gold mine of ideas that employees possess is baffling. The only explanation is that these types of managers believe that they are the only ones who know how to improve the business. This is absurd because nobody has a monopoly on knowledge.
Besides being the experts at their jobs, employees can bring a fresh perspective to analyzing the problems of the business because they have a different set of life experiences. That is valuable. In fact, asking employees how to improve the business is tantamount to getting high quality management consulting advice. Why pay $100/hour for a professional opinion when your employees can give one to you for free? In addition, listening to the ideas that employees have will be a tremendous morale booster. Most workers would cherish the opportunity to give input on decisions that affect their jobs. The message being communicated from managers to employees is that “You are important and we value what you have to say.” That is one of the highest compliments that a manager can give an employee.

I’ve seen a great many people who are exceedingly good at execution, but
exceedingly poor at picking the important things.
They are magnificent at getting the unimportant things done.
They have an impressive record of achievement on trivial
matters.

Assertion On The Job
Assertive means your ability to act in harmony with your
self esteem without hurting the others. You should not manipulate
others nor you should be manipulated by others.
To be assertive in your job or profession, You must
possess active orientation and set goals that enhance your self-esteem.
In the job , the first priority is to complete the job and accomplish
the task. The aim is achievement and accomplishment. The stress in
the feeling you express there is more on appropriateness then openness.
In the pursuit of job goals, you remain an individual,

an extension of yourself , expressing something of you - your
style, your speed , the way you meet on-the-job problems.
The more assertive you are in relation to work and more willing
to show " this is me ", the more satisfaction you gain. When the
structure of the job or your own psychological blocks prevent this ,
resentment and alienation occur.
Assertion on the job involves five basic skills :
1. An active Orientation : You must think through
your work goals, the steps you must take to achieve them, and how ,
in doing this, you can utilise your talents to the fullest possible
extent.
2. Ability to Do The Job : Interference , obstacles
and blocks sometimes arise in the work situation because you have not
mastered the skills you need for your particular job. In addition ,
you may have problems with self-control.You may possess bad work habits,
lack discipline and the ability to concentrate.
3. Control of your Anxieties and Fears:
Inappropriate emotional reactions interfere with work performance.
General tensions can produce fatigue, irritability, and poor
judgement. Fear of specific work situation that may lead to
avoidance of the very task needed to get your job done.
This may keep you from achieving your work goal.
4. Good Interpersonal Relations on the Job:
Lillian Roberts,personnel counsellor observed: Most
people get fired because they can't get along with
other people. You must be able to relate to peers,
subordinates, and superiors, make requests and ask
favours; say no when necessary , handle put-downs.
5. The Art of Negotiating the System:
This requires knowledge of the job society and the specific skills
that will enable you to work within, through , or against it to achieve

As we flip the calendar, we need to keep flipping our mind as well. Often, our diaries are full with memories. See that you don't fill your future dates with past events. Allow the space for creativity to dawn. Celebration of the New Year allows you to be wise. Learn and unlearn from the past, and move on.
In the past year, how many days were you in sanyas? How many days were you struggling, being caught in maya? Turn back and remember the whole year. Do not run away from anything. Do not reject anything. Do not go away from anything. At the same time, let your attention be on the self. This is a delicate balance. That balance is yoga. A poor man celebrates the New Year once a year. A rich man celebrates each day. But the richest man celebrates every moment.
How rich are you? If you celebrate every moment, you are the Lord of Creation. Review the year while you celebrate. This is your homework. Compare your performance in the year before last and smile.
The year 2008 is fortunate because you are living at this time!!! When you are living for the sake of the world, the world is fortunate. Let time celebrate your presence. You keep smiling as ever.
When you let time celebrate you, you are a witness amid celebration. The heart always longs for the old, the mind for the new. Life is a combination of both. Let the New Year bring into our life ancient wisdom and modernity, as life is incomplete without either of them. Don't feel shy to speak about human and spiritual values. There is so much talk about success. Have you ever thought what success is? Success is simply ignorance about one's capabilities. Success is ignorance about the power of the self. Because you assume you can do only this much. If there are obstacles, you are clear about your objective. With a calm and serene mind, think of many possibilities. Know that failures are stepping stones for greater success. Actually, there are no failures in life. All the seeming failures are only stepping stones for greater success. If you feel the obstacle is too much, deep prayer can work miracles.
The feeling that "I am blessed" can help you overcome any failure. Once you realise that you are blessed, thenall the complaints disappear.all the grumbling disappears.all the insecurities disappear.a sense of not being loved disappears.wanting love disappears.
Ego is always ambitious and wants to do tough jobs like climbing Mount Everest. Whereas in a simple act like watching a butterfly, watering the garden, watching the birds or the sky, can bring deep relaxation, and relaxation connects you with your source. Seemingly trivial actions open a new dimension and bring in immense peace and rest. Just come out of your little shell and feel free.
There is a saying: Behind every successful man is a woman. I will modify this: Behind every success there is the Divine saying "I am behind you".

Your prejudice against gender, religion, caste and class does not allow you to mingle with everyone around you. Often, you don't sit with people who are not economically or socially at par with you. You have to learn to break that barrier. Also, there is age prejudice. Teenagers don't like to have fun with elderly people and vice versa. Gender prejudice is more prevalent in rural areas. Caste system is present even among the royalties of Europe, the UK and Japan. Religious prejudice is well known. There are good people and bad people in every community, religion and every section of society. Don't be prejudiced against them. At the same time don't be shy about your identity. When you overcome prejudice, you will be very natural, and your quality of life will improve.
